When airplanes land at the Palo Alto Airport, birds can be close by, sometimes too close. That's why pilots are opposing a plan to turn a patch of vacant airport land into a modern composting plant for food scraps, green waste and sewer sludge.
Josh Smith of the West Valley Flying Club said pilots are not against composting, just the location of the proposed facility. The Federal Aviation Administration has also wrote a letter to Palo Alto saying the land is just too close to the airport's final approach path and helicopter landing zone.
