State Report Criticizes SF Bay Oil Spill Response

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― California's state auditor says the state government's response to November's San Francisco Bay oil spill was hindered by poor communication and the delayed reporting of the spill's size.

More than 53,000 gallons of oil spilled into the bay after the Cosco Busan container ship struck a San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge support tower.

The auditor's report issued Thursday says the state's response immediately after the accident was hampered by a shortage of communications equipment and lack of trained communications officers.

The report says a "lack of urgency" in calculating and reporting the spill's size may also have delayed the response.

The state auditor's office is the latest government agency to analyze the response to the spill, which fouled miles of coastline and killed thousands of birds.
