Scientists studying the effects of last November's oil spill are planting fish eggs off the Marin County bay shore.
Biologists have been working at the foot of the Richmond San Rafael bridge over the last few days planting herring eggs to see if any of the thousands of gallons of bunker fuel spilled last fall will affect the fish as they grow.
The eggs are growing along areas hard hit by the spill, Richardson Bay, Horseshoe Cove near Fort Baker and the north side of Angel Island. Scientists from the Bodega Marine Lab will analyze the eggs to see if any residual pollution shows up inside.
The results of the study won't be released because they could be used as evidence in court cases against the shipping company that owns the Cosco Busan.
Only 44 percent of the bunker fuel was recovered following the November spill. Fifty beaches, piers, and coastal areas were closed in the aftermath.
A two year bay restoration plan is under development, the shipping company could be forced to pay for the program.
