Strict Green Standards Imposed On SF Construction

 Environment & The Green Beat

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom signed a building ordinance Monday that will impose strict new green requirements on newly constructed residential and commercial buildings, as well as renovations to existing buildings.

The ordinance, which requires extensive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and other green building certifications, makes San Francisco the city with the most stringent green building requirements in the nation.

"If we want to get serious about addressing the root causes of global warming, then let's draw down the empty rhetoric and start taking concrete actions," Newsom said in a prepared statement.

City officials expect the ordinance to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 60,000 tons, save 220,000 megawatt hours of power and save 100 million gallons of drinking waters by 2012.

The city's Climate Action Plan found that energy use in buildings and facilities is responsible for about 50 percent of San Francisco's greenhouse gas emissions.

Newly constructed commercial buildings covering more than 5,000 square feet, residential buildings more than 75 feet in height, and renovations on buildings with more than 25,000 square feet will be subject to the new ordinance.

"A lot of people don't realize that their homes and businesses create a significant portion of our carbon footprint...by signing these strict green building standards into law, we're saying enough is enough," Newsom said.
