Bay Area Group Raises Concerns On Fire Retardant

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ― A flame retardant that was once thought to help save lives, could be killing people slowly but surely. In a report to be released Tuesday, a Bay Area environmental group will release a report on the dangers of brominated flame retardants called PBDE's.

PBDE's are found in everything from furniture, to car seats, even animals. Friends of the Earth, a Bay Area environmental group, documents how products such as car seats contain up to 9 percent of the chemical, which builds up in the body over time.

Some states aren't waiting for the Federal Government to take action. Some, including California, have passed laws to phase out at least some of them. But the state of Maine has banned them all.
