4,000 People March In Fresno Over Water Rules

 Environment & The Green Beat
FRESNO (CBS 5 / AP) ― Nearly 4,000 farmers, farmworkers and their supporters rallied at Fresno City Hall on Wednesday, calling on federal officials to ease regulations that have cut their water supplies.

The noon rally was organized by the Latino Water Coalition, which also organized an April march from Mendota to the San Luis Reservoir.

The rally came on the heels of a visit by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who has assigned his chief deputy to work full-time on solving the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta's many problems.

Growers, with the help of congressmen from the region, have asked officials to ease rules that call for reduced water pumping in the delta to protect the delta smelt.

Environmental activists and fishing groups say the rules are necessary to help the ailing fishing industry as well as ocean species that depend on the fish for survival.
