CA Ag Secretary Heads To 'Epicenter Of Drought'

 Environment & The Green Beat

MENDOTA (CBS 5 / AP) ― California's secretary of Food and Agriculture is planning to be in the farm community of Mendota to learn firsthand about the drought impacts suffered by San Joaquin Valley farmers and the workers and businesses that depend on them.

Officials have called Mendota, with its 40 percent unemployment rate, "the epicenter of the drought."

Secretary A.G. Kawamura said the hearing Wednesday is to gather information for a long-term solution for a reliable water supply.

San Joaquin Valley farmers historically have received most of their water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, but pumping has been severely limited this year to protect endangered species and the estuary.
