BART Removes Seats To Accommodate People, Luggage

 Environment & The Green Beat

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― BART is experimenting with ways to give passengers a more comfortable trip.

Even though the transit system is seeing record ridership, officials say there would be plenty of room in cars if riders would just move toward the center or rear.

"For the people who do have to stand, who aren't able to get a seat we'll try to make them a little bit more comfortable," said Assistant General Manager of Operations Paul Overseer.

He says a demonstration project with 20 cars will determine the effectiveness of removing some seats to allow more flow, and create additional space for bikes and luggage.

"With the reconfiguration, any door that you walk into will have an open space to the right," said Overseer.

A treat for those who are a little on the short side - BART is considering lowering those safety straps to make it easier to hold on.
