Angel Island To Reopen Following Bay Spill
ANGEL ISLAND (AP) ―
The popular beaches of Angel Island State Park will reopen Saturday for the first time since 58,000 gallons of fuel spilled into San Francisco Bay last month.
Even though the beaches are reopening, officials are warning people that there may still be balls of the gooey fuel remaining that killed thousands of birds and marred miles of coastline.
A container ship collided with a support tower of the Bay Bridge on Nov. 7, tearing a gash in the hull and leaking the fuel into the water.
Several investigations are under way to determine fault for the oil spill and the cleanup response. The Coast Guard also has asked the pilot of the Cosco Busan, Capt. John Cota, to voluntarily
surrender his license.
