Angel Island Wildfire Now Fully Contained

ANGEL ISLAND (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ― A fire on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay that burned more than half of the 740-acre state park was fully contained late Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.

Marin County Fire Dept. spokesman Mike Giannini indicated that 100 percent containment came about 4 p.m. after firefighters were able to extinguish the perimeter of the fire.

Fire crews would remain on the island over the next few weeks to put out any remaining hot spots, he said.

More than 250 firefighters were ferried to the island to corral the blaze, which started Sunday night and consumed about 380 acres.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

The island is home to more than 120 historical structures, but none were damaged. A single wooden water tank succumbed to the flames early Monday morning.

Giannini said the removal of eucalyptus trees from the island over several years helped stop the spread of the fire. He said the trees tend to burn quickly.

The island remained closed to the public and would not reopen until conditions are safe and power is restored, Marin County fire officials said.

More information about the park can be found by calling (415) 435-5390.
