Rodeo Beach Fully Opened Following Bay Spill
RODEO BEACH (BCN) ―
The northern half of Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands reopened Friday at 2 p.m., according to the National Park Service.
Oil worked its way into the sand on the northern portion of the beach, forcing cleanup crews to excavate the oil from beneath the sand, dump it by the surf and wait for the water to separate the oil from the sand, said Rudy Evenson, a National Park Service spokesman.
The oil then washed back ashore and crews removed it from the top of the sand using absorbent materials, like mats made out of human hair, Evenson said.
The oil came from container ship Cosco Busan, which clipped a San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge tower Nov. 7 and spilled 58,000 gallons of fuel into the water.
The southern portion of the beach reopened Nov. 23.
