Outside Lands Concert Comes To Golden Gate Park

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― A three-day music festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park this weekend will take on the name the park previously went by in the 1800s -- Outside Lands.

After three years of planning the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, the festival will feature 66 bands across Speedway Meadow, Lindley Meadow and the Polo Field in Golden Gate Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, according to Gregg Perloff of Another Planet Enterprises, the group producing the show.

The festival, which includes headliners Radiohead, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Jack Johnson, has a 60,000-person capacity each day. Nearly half of those expected to attend are from more than 50 miles away, Perloff said.

"San Francisco has such a famous musical community, it seemed crazy there was never a large musical festival like there is all over the rest of the world," Perloff said, referring to such famous festivals as Bonnaroo, which takes place in Tennessee each year.

Six stages have been set up throughout the three locations and each field is linked by a path so guests can wander between stages while under the supervision of a security staff of about 500 within 10 miles of fencing.

A solar-powered stage, as well as an organic farmers' market and coffee bar, interactive energy efficiency exhibits, environmental education, and a recycling center will make up Eco Lands, designed to make the festival "green," according to Perloff.

Guests are also encouraged to bring photographs or videos to a tent with professional editing, which will show footage and clips of guests' contributions during the shows. After the event is over the pictures will be made available online in the form of a digital scrapbook.

A portion of every ticket will be given to the maintenance of Golden Gate Park, amounting to at least $.5 million guaranteed for the park, Perloff said.

Festival tickets cost $85 for one day, $249.50 for a single-day VIP ticket and $225.50 for a three-day pass.

Because parking is limited in Golden Gate Park, guests are encouraged to walk, ride bicycles or take public transit. A bicycle valet will be available.
