Liam's List - Best Bay Area Eats

  Greetings chums,

From a sexy breakfast, to great dinners spots and even a one of a kind drive through, there is much to digest on this week's list.

Go on, treat yourself to a nice meal out this weekend.

1 - SEXY IN THE CITY BREAKFAST
Vitrine at Hotel St. Regis
125 3rd Street, San Francisco
Monday to Friday 6:30am - 10:30am
Saturday & Sunday 7:00am - 10:30am

I rarely recommend a fancy spot for breakfast but for the ultimate power breakfast look no further than the elegant Vitrine restaurant at Hotel St. Regis in downtown San Francisco. Sure, you can get the usual breakfast fare here: omelettes du jour, pancakes and more but they come with a sophisticated twist. And all dishes are crafted with the freshest, local ingredients, some of it plucked just feet away, from the rooftop garden.

2 - SOUL BREAKFAST
Brenda's French Soul Food
652 Polk Street @ Eddy, San Francisco
Monday to Saturday 8am to 3pm
Just when I think I have been to all the best breakfast spots around the Bay, a new place opens up and blows me away. Brenda's on Polk Street offers a taste of the Big Easy for breakfast or lunch and it is, quite frankly, KNOCKOUT. My favorite item on the menu is naughty but ever so nice: the Ghirardelli chocolate-filled beignets. WOW, WOW, WOW. The cajun-inspired omelettes are also delicious. Go on visit Brenda's and treat yourself to a taste of New Orleans.

3 - BEST OF THE MED
La Mediterranee
2210 Fillmore Street, San Francisco
Daily 11am - 10pm

For a taste of the Med like none other, venture to this Fillmore Street gem in San Francisco - a fixture on the street for almost 30 years. It's a small joint with big flavors: the chicken kebab is scrumptious, the tender lamb lule - wow - and the chicken pomegranate baked in wild herbs - heaven. A great spot for an intimate dinner for two, book a table after the sun goes down.

4 - EASTERN TREAT
Red Lantern
808 Winslow Street, Redwood City
Lunch Monday - Friday, 11am - 2pm
Dinner Monday - Sunday 5pm - 11pm
Destination dining finally comes to Redwood City with the opening of Red Lantern. The flavors of Southeast Asia are offered here and the master in the kitchen is Chef Danial.  Chef's recipes come from his mother and every bit of love passed down shows up in every dish. Let me tell you, Red Lantern is worth getting the train from SF for.

5 - ITALIAN COMFORT FOOD
Trevese Restaurant and Lounge
115 N Santa Cruz Ave, Los Gatos
Tuesday to Sunday, 5p.m.-11p.m.
Seekers of spectacular culinary fare, listen up.  Follow your nose now to the best new spot to eat in the South Bay - Trevese. Under the direction of Chef Mike Miller the food is - as he is - brimming with adventure and fun.  The service here was as superb as the food itself.  A right royal culinary treat and I will return for more.

6 - KILLER BRUNCH
Savor
3913 24th Street, San Francisco
Mon-Thu, Sun 8am-10pm
Fri-Sat, 8am-11pm

There is no better way to spend a weekend morning than at brunch and in San Francisco's Noe Valley, I know just the spot. Savor on 24th is where you will find the best crepes in the Bay. There, I said it. The Tuscany crepe is my fave: it's loaded with chicken chunks in a heavenly pesto sauce with pine nuts and spinach. It is to die for.  If the weather is nice, enjoy brunch outside on the patio. Don't worry about your pocket book, brunch here is a cheap eat and tasty, too.

7 - ROME CALLING
SPQR
1911 Fillmore St (between Bush St & Pine St), San Francisco
Mon-Fri 11:30am.-2:30pm
Mon-Sun 5:30pm.-11pm
Sat-Sun 9:30am -2:30pm
The food is rustic Italian fare, the stuff you might find in Rome. There are many tasty dishes offered on the menu here. I say, do the small plates, at $8 a piece you cannot go wrong. Get the fried Brussel Sprouts - heaven. The pasta is delicious too and a steal at $14 a plate. No reservations taken here, just show up and hope for a table. Get the counter space by the kitchen if you can. The sensational smells and the full on chef show throughout my meal sent me to culinary heaven.

8 - EAT TACOS HERE
Nick's Crispy Tacos
1500 Broadway, San Francisco
Mon-Fri 11:30am - 9pm
Sat-Sun 10:30am - 9pm
Located in the Rouge nightclub, but don't be put off by the chandeliers, just follow your nose to the tacos. At $2.95 a taco you can't go wrong here. Add a dollar to give your tacos the Nick's treatment; a dollop of quacamole and a dollop of cheese. The Nieman Ranch steak taco in my personal fave. The tacos here will make your tummy happy and you will return for more. Now who is Nick?

9 - FINE CHINESE
Eric's Restaurant
1500 Church St (between 27th St & Comerford St), San Francisco
Monday-Thursday from 11am - 9pm
Friday & Sat from 11am -10pm
Sun 12:30pm -9pm

You don't have to venture to Chinatown to find great Chinese food; you'll find it in San Francisco's Noe Valley at Eric's. You can eat in or take out, either way the food is first class and you will quickly get addicted.  The crispy pot stickers to start are naughty but nice. The string beans basking in a black bean sauce are terribly tasty. And if you love soup, try the won ton, you will not be disappointed. Eric's is located on the J Church Muni line, making it an easy spot to get to if you are car-less and live outside Noe Valley.

10 - ONLY IN THE BAY AREA
Falafel Drive-In
2301 Stevens Creek Blvd, San Jose
Monday to Saturday, 10am to 8pm
Sunday, 10am to 6pm
Yes, you read it right, welcome food lovers to the culinary experience that is the Falafel Drive-In. Not since discovering In-N-Out Burger a decade ago, have I been excited about a drive-in food joint. The happy-tummy-making falafel ball sandwich with the special secret sauce is a must have and a good deal, too, at just $3. Wash it down with a tasty banana milk shake. This spot is one of a kind and I highly recommend it whether you drive in or stop and sit down.
