A production team is in San Francisco to begin work this week on a movie that will look at one of the city's most well known gay rights leaders.
Producers of the film entitled Milk, say the non-documentary feature will explore the life of the nation's first openly gay politician, Supervisor Harvey Milk.
Sean Penn will portray Milk. Josh Brolin has been cast as Dan White, the former supervisor who fatally shot Milk, and Mayor George Moscone in 1978.
Current San Francisco Supervisor Tom Ammiano says he hopes the film will bring Milk's story to the mainstream.
"Preserving this history, using it as a teaching tool. Also using it as a compass for saying, 'gee, we've got these rights, but are we going to hold on to them," said Ammiano, who will appear as himself in the film. He and Milk were friends in the 70s.
