'Go Green' Theme For SF St. Patty's Day Festival
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS / BCN) ―
A sea of green, a symphony of bagpipes and a bunch of beer-drinkers took over downtown San Francisco on Saturday during the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival.
This year's theme for the 158th annual parade was "Go Green!" in support of an eco-friendly environment.
So, people who would normally have been wearing green during the celebration were now also helping support the environment.
The parade started at Second and Market streets around 11:30 a.m. with dancers, performers and visitors from Ireland.
Event spokesman Diarmuid Philpott, with the United Irish Societies of San Francisco, said he has been to celebrations in Dublin, Ireland but is convinced that San Francisco's event is "more traditional because there's more Irish dancing and more Irish culture ... but it's a little more American."
The parade ended at the Civic Center Plaza with a festival featuring three beer gardens, live entertainment, pony rides, a petting zoo and about 60 vendors. The event brought in hundreds of celebrators.
