Vallejo School Board Votes To Cut 248 Jobs

VALLEJO (CBS 5 / BCN) ― Facing a projected budget deficit of at least $11 million, the Vallejo City Unified School District voted on resolutions Wednesday to issue layoff notices to 248 employees.

That number includes 177 teachers and 13 high school counselors and 58 vice principals, coordinators, directors and other administrative and supervisory employees, school district spokesman Jason Hodge said.

The school board meeting took place Wednesday night at school district headquarters. Hundreds of teachers and classified employees protested the budget cuts that require the layoffs, Hodge said.

Hodge said the district will likely not layoff that many employees but the notices must be given by law before March 15.

The teachers include those in physical education, library media, independent study and 50 teachers that enable class reduction in grades K-3 and 11 more teachers who help reduce class sizes in grades 9-12.

The district has never had to give this many layoff notices before, Hodge said.

The school board is scheduled to adopt the $80 million 2009-2010 budget June 17.
