UCSF Lab Researcher Accused Of Poisoning Colleague
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS / BCN / AP) ―
A researcher at the University of California, San Francisco is under arrest after he allegedly poisoned a female colleague's drink, campus police said Tuesday.
Post-doctoral fellow Ben Chun Liu, 38, was being held on suspicion of attempted murder and poisoning.
Investigators who searched Liu's home and the university urology lab where he worked said they recovered evidence that he poisoned lab co-worker Mei Cao, also a lab research associate.
Cao was examined at UCSF Medical Center and later released.
Because of the ongoing investigation, police would not say what substance was used to allegedly poison the drink.
UCSF spokeswoman Kristen Bole said she did not know whether the alleged poisoning occurred on the university campus or whether Liu and Cao had any sort of relationship outside of work.
Liu, a Chinese citizen, was arrested last Friday and placed on an immigration hold. He remained in custody at San Francisco County Jail on Tuesday.
Police said they had not yet determined a motive in the poisoning case, but indicated it did not appear there were additional suspects or victims.
