The San Francisco Unified School District planned to issue layoff notices Friday to 535 school teachers as a result of anticipated state cuts in education funding, but union officials told CBS 5 they feared the layoffs could ultimately total as many as a thousand.
District spokeswoman Gentle Blythe confirmed Thursday night that 535 teachers would be sent formal notices Friday telling them their jobs could be eliminated this summer.
Those pink-slips were approved by the school board last month and the district is required by law to provide those who face layoffs with advance notice, she said.
Earlier Thursday, Mike Myslinski, a spokesman for the California Teachers Association, and Dennis Kelly, president of the United Educators of SF, told CBS 5 they anticipated the district would send notifications to up to 1,000 teachers alerting them about possible layoffs.
The San Francisco schools face the loss of roughly $40 million, about 10 percent of its 2008-09 budget, largely from the state cuts proposed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Blythe said.
Mayor Gavin Newsom has said he plans to ask the Board of Supervisors to allow the schools to tap into the city's rainy-day fund to help soften the financial blow, but officials admit that would only provide a "short-term solution."
