San Diego Principal Resigns, Found Changing Grades

 CBS 5 Education

SAN DIEGO (AP) ― The principal of a renowned charter school at the University of California, San Diego has resigned after auditors found hundreds of grades were inaccurately recorded.

Doris Alvarez quit her job at Preuss School on Tuesday, effective immediately. She had been principal since the school opened in 1999.

UCSD auditors found last week of tampering with 427 grades over the past six years. In 72 percent of the cases, grades were raised.

The school educates about 780 students from sixth through 12th grades and serves low-income and minority students. It was recently named 10th-best high school in America by U.S. News & World Report.
