Student Acquitted In DVC Grade-Changing Scam

MARTINEZ (AP) ― A former Diablo Valley College student employee accused of illegally changing grades has been acquitted of all charges.

A Contra Costa Superior Court jury on Friday found Erick Martinez not guilty of computer fraud for allegedly changing 15 of his grades and some of his friends' grades.

Defense attorneys told jurors someone with a grudge against Martinez may have changed his transcript.

If convicted, Martinez could have been deported to his native Guatemala.
Martinez is the first person to have been tried in the grade-changing scam that included more than 50 former Diablo Valley College and Los Medanos College students. Most are accused of paying to have their grades changed between 2000 and 2006.

At least three ringleaders in the scam have pleaded guilty or no contest to charges.
