SFSU A National Leader In Minority Grad Rates

(CBS 5 / BCN) San Francisco State University announced Wednesday that it ranked among the top colleges in the nation for awarding undergraduate degrees to minority students.

SFSU ranked 12th nationally by awarding 2,710 baccalaureate degrees to minorities during the 2007-08 academic year, according to a report published June 25 by a publication called Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.

That number represents half of the university's graduates and marked an 11-percent increase from the previous year, according to university officials.

SFSU also ranked ninth for awarding undergraduate degrees to Asian Americans in all disciplines and 31st for Hispanic Americans, both of which were increases of nearly 10 percent from the previous year.

More than 60 percent of the university's student body comes from minority backgrounds, while 48 percent of the university's tenured or tenure-track faculty are non-white.

SFSU enrolls more than 30,000 students each year and is the only master's level public university serving the counties of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin.

"Equal access to an education is essential for a vibrant and well-functioning democracy," SFSU President Robert A. Corrigan said in a statement.

"It is important to the future of this state to continue providing educational opportunities to all the people of California. We are pleased by this recognition, but there is still much work to do," Corrigan said.
