Calif. Court Asked To Reconsider Home Schooling

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― A legal group that works to protect religious freedom is asking a court to reconsider a recent decision that made most home-schooling a crime in California.

The Alliance Defense Fund filed the motion on Friday, saying parents have the right to make educational choices for their children.

The 2nd District Court of Appeal ruled Feb. 28 that parents who home school their children must have a teaching credential. State officials have reviewed the matter and tried to assure parents that they see no reason to change current policies regarding home-school students.

The ruling stemmed from a child abuse case involving a couple whose eight children were taught at home, instead of attending schools where they could be monitored for signs of mistreatment.
