Calif. Superintendent Slams Education Budget Cuts

OAKLAND (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― At a visit to an Oakland School, State Superintendent Jack O'Connell bluntly accused Governor Schwarzenegger of putting public education "under attack" with his proposed budget cuts.

"Cuts at the magnitude that are currently being proposed by the Governor, simply put, would be devastating to public education," said O'Connell.

O'Connell said the cuts would mean $800 less per student, or about $400,000 less per school.

In response, Governor Schwarzenegger's office said the plan is the fairest, most bipartisan way to make cuts.

One top teacher's union official told KCBS Radio that layoff notices to teachers next month will be at a record level, perhaps 10 to 15 percent of all California teachers.
