Caring For Seniors And The Disabled

Preparedness Tips

1.      Eliminate hazards to make it as easy as possible to quickly get under a sturdy table for protection or to evacuate your home.

2.      Anchor special equipment such as oxygen tanks

3.      Keep an updated list of medications, allergies, special equipment, names and numbers of doctors, pharmacists and family members. Make sure this list is in your earthquake kit and also posted in a convenient location in your home.

4.      Keep extra supplies near or in your emergency kit; such as eyeglasses, wheelchairs, walking aids or extra batteries for hearing aids.

5.      Put a security light in each room. There are many lights that will light up automatically if there is loss of electricity.

6.      Have a whistle in case you need to signal for help

7.      Find two people you trust who will check on you after a disaster.

During and After an Earthquake

If you are in bed or sitting down during an earthquake, stay there and cover your head with a pillow or blanket and protect your neck. Beware of aftershocks.

If you are standing during an earthquake, drop and cover or sit down. You could be thrown to the floor if you are standing.

Turn on your portable radio for instructions and news reports

If you evacuate, leave a message at your home telling family members and others where you can be found.
