Remembering The Day That Shook The Bay
Loma Prieta Earthquake: October 17, 1989
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ―
Join the CBS 5 news team for a series of reports looking back at the Loma Prieta earthquake 20 years later, and ahead at the future of science in quake prediction and better protection.
The earthquake struck at 5:04p.m. on October 17, 1989. It killed 63 people and injured thousands. The moment magnitude registered 6.9.
Violent shaking triggered the collapse of buildings and homes in Santa Cruz County and sent mud and rocks cascading in landslides and cliff falls.
Liquefaction beneath San Francisco's Marina District proved deadly: buildings collapsed and many burned in subsequent fires.
The double-decked Cypress Freeway section of Interstate 880 in Oakland failed, crushing cars between roadways. Here 42 people died, the most of any location in the quake.
The Bay Bridge swayed several inches to the east, shearing bolts from a 230-ton section of the upper deck, which crashed onto the deck below. A driver mistakenly guided toward the collapse slammed into the gap and was killed.
Scientists traced the quake to a previously unknown branch of the San Andreas fault. The epicenter lies almost 17 km beneath the earth's surface in a wooded area of
Nisene Marks State Park in Santa Cruz County.
We will explore all of this history and hear from many of the people who endured the crisis and survived. Plus, scientists will discuss what they know now about predicting seismic activity and what we've learned about being better prepared.
