San Francisco will host a series of events to mark the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, focusing on better preparing communities for the next big disaster.
"While the events of October 17, 1989 serve as a start reminder of our region's vulnerability to earthquakes, they also provide an opportunity to reinvigorate our commitment to making emergency preparedness an everyday part of our lives," said Mayor Gavin Newsom.
"Where I was" Gavin Newsom remembers the earthquake.
The city's project, dubbed "The Big Rumble," will mix readiness education with a commemoration of Loma Prieta's heroes and victims.
"The Big Rumble community events give us an opportunity to honor the heroism of 1989 while sharing our commitment to preparedness with our friends and neighbors," Newsom said.
The events begin Tuesday, October 13, with a panel discussion and reception at City Hall. First responders, earthquake experts, and others will discuss how emergency management and the protection of infrastructure has changed since 1989.
Two days later, the public is invited to take part in The Great California ShakeOut Drill to practice methods of protecting people during quakes, and being better prepared to take action.
On the earthquake anniversary, at least four San Francisco neighborhoods are planning block parties that will include resource fairs providing preparedness education along with activities and entertainment.
Later that afternoon, a special planning committee will announce the Marina Earthquake Monument. Organizers say they are securing the final building permits for a permanent memorial to victims in that neighborhood.
