Chopper 5 Live

On a typical day, you can find the Chopper 5 crew live on the Early Edition Monday through Friday between 5 am and 7 am.

Interesting bits and bites about Chopper 5

Chopper 5 is an A-Star 350BA turbine helicopter manufactured in Texas at Eurocopters. The jet engine produces 650 shaft horse power and can lift 4630 pounds.

A-Stars are well known for their versatility, stability, speed (176 mph Vne) and superior flight characteristics in calm or windy conditions. This makes the A-Star an ideal platform for bringing you steady video images of traffic, weather and breaking news.

Chopper 5, like other news helicopters, is unusually equipped. The rotating, gyro supported ball under the nose is only a hint of the electronic sophistication on the inside.

Chopper 5 is equipped with the latest technology comprised of more than 40 microprocessors. Each processor talks to one another at lightning speed allowing CBS 5 to deliver the highest quality images. In addition to three cameras mounted inside and out, Chopper 5 is equipped with a gyro-stabilized 70/1 zoom camera.

The microwave pod under the aircraft is coupled to the secondary GPS navigation system allowing the microwave antenna to point to any selected repeater regardless of the position or speed of the aircraft.

This gives our viewers real time video inside and outside of the aircraft. The signal is immediately received and then it can be transmitted to satellites for viewing all of the world as need by affiliates during breaking news.
