Oakland Official Edgerly's Nephew Appears In Court

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

OAKLAND (CBS 5 / BCN) ― The nephew of Oakland City Administrator Deborah Edgerly appeared in Alameda County Superior Court Wednesday on charges of carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle and carrying an unregistered loaded weapon.

But the hearing at which William Lovan, a 27-year-old Concord man who works for the city of Oakland as a meter repairman, was to enter a plea was postponed until July 2 because he didn't yet have an attorney.

Lovan, who was dressed in blue jeans and a green long-sleeve shirt and was accompanied by three friends, declined to talk to reporters after his court appearance.

He's free on $100,000 bail and still works for the city.

Oakland police say Lovan is a member of the Acorn drug gang, which they say is the city's worst gang in many years.

Lovan was arrested last week as part of "Operation Nutcracker," a three-month effort by Oakland police and other agencies that led to the arrest of 54 people and the confiscation of 41 guns.

Lt. Ersie Joyner said the Acorn gang, which is based at the Acorn Housing project in West Oakland, is connected to 37 homicides in West Oakland in the last three years.

Edgerly, 56, is being investigated for possibly interfering with Oakland police the night of June 7, when she confronted officers outside a West Oakland liquor store and asked why Lovan's car, which contained a loaded gun, was being towed.

Edgerly said Tuesday that she will retire effective July 31.

Mayor Ron Dellums said the investigation into Edgerly's conduct had nothing to do with her decision to retire.
