Oakland police said the second of two suspects in a string of armed robberies surrendered outside a studio apartment near Telegraph Avenue and 32nd Street following a four-hour standoff Thursday.
The standoff, which had closed Telegraph Avenue between 30th and 34th streets, ended about 11:30 a.m.
Events began unfolding when police received calls of an armed robbery at a doughnut store on 44th and Broadway earlier Thursday. Officers were able to match a suspect vehicle in the area to descriptions of one used in previous robberies.
Police arrested one suspect around 7 a.m., but the second suspect - identified as 45-year-old Ken Stanley - fled to his apartment where he refused to surrender to police for more than four hours.
A short time before Stanley's surrender, a woman and child were seen fleeing the scene. They were later identified by authorities as Stanley's sister and niece.
No one was hurt during the standoff, and police reopened streets in the area just after noon.
Police told the Oakland Tribune newspaper that the two men in custody were believed responsible for a string of robberies along Telegraph Avenue.
