911 Tapes To Be Released In SJ Suspect's Killing

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / BCN) ― San Jose officials have ordered the release of 911 recordings and reports in the May fatal shooting by police of a mentally ill man.

A city council committee approved the release Wednesday to serve public interest in whether officers knew Daniel Pham was mentally ill before they killed him.

Pham's family and leaders in the city's Vietnamese-American community have demanded that authorities release the recordings and reports. But police have raised privacy concerns on behalf of witnesses that could be identified.

Officers were responding to reports that Pham had cut his brother's throat May 10 and said they opened fire when he refused to drop the knife. A grand jury later cleared the officers of any criminal wrongdoing.

Mayor Chuck Reed says the material will be made public, with redactions, on Nov. 13.
