Arson investigators responded to the scene of two early morning car fires in San Francisco's Western Addition neighborhood Tuesday, near Japantown.
The car fires are the sixth and seventh such blazes since the weekend.
Police say it is too soon to determine whether a torched minivan and Volvo station wagon are connected to any of the five other car fires started since early Saturday morning.
When crews arrived at about 4:15 a.m. Tuesday at some apartments on Geary near Japantown, the two cars were described as being balls of fire, with flaming gas pooling in the open parking lot, threatening to ignite nearby vehicles.
The cars were burned down to the rims of their tires.
The woman whose family owns the Volvo awoke to the smell of burning rubber. "It's one thing to break into a car, okay you want to steal something, okay I'm still angry at you but okay," she rationalized. "I don't know what joy you get out of that, if all these cars caught on fire, these buildings would catch on fire, what, people are sleeping? I wouldn't have woken up."
There was a similar spate of car fires in San Francisco in May 2009.
