Outpouring Of Support For Richmond Rape Victim
RICHMOND (CBS 5 / KCBS) ―
The gang rape of a lesbian on Dec. 13 was drawing sympathizers, demonstrators and cash. Efforts over the weekend included a candlelight vigil Saturday night and leafleting on Sunday afternoon to help locate the four attackers.
Police consider it a hate crime because the men made reference to the 28- year-old victim's sexual orientation - probably deduced from a rainbow bumper sticker on her car - during the assault at 15th Street and Visalia Ave. in Richmond's Belding-Wood neighborhood.
"We want to let the criminals know, we want to let the world know that they can't just intimidate us and push us into a corner and scare us from being who we are and loving who we love," said Aileen Cancino of the group Contra Costa County Equality.
A candlelight vigil was held Saturday night at the site of the attack.
The assailants referred to each other using the street names Pato and Blu. Police were looking for any information on the attack. Volunteers gathered Sunday afternoon in front of the Foods Co. grocery store at 1250 Macdonald Ave. in Richmond to get and distribute leaflets seeking leads in the case.
A reward fund had grown to almost $10,000. Donations could be sent to Community Violence Solutions, 2101 Van Ness St., San Pablo, CA 94806. For more information, call (510) 237-0113.
