Richmond Police Admit Assault Was Ignored For Days

RICHMOND (AP) ― Richmond police acknowledge that a report detailing a racially charged attack on a Pinole man sat unnoticed for days.

Chief Chris Magnus says an officer's report on the Jan. 24 beating of Brandon Manning was placed on the desk of a sergeant who was absent for several days.

Police arrested seven white suspects Saturday after Manning's family called to ask if the department planned to investigate.

Prosecutors on Tuesday charged Steven Kinney, Andrew Word, Victor Faria and Richard Lange with assault, battery and hate crimes. All the defendants range in age from 18 to 20.

Manning suffered six broken bones in the attack. The 24-year-old says the group yelled racial epithets as they punched and kicked him after giving him a ride.
