2nd Woman Arrested In Pittsburg Killing Of SF Man
PITTSBURG (CBS 5 / BCN) ―
Police have arrested a second woman in connection with the robbery and murder of a San Francisco man in Pittsburg on Nov. 3, Pittsburg police Lt. Brian Addington said.
Teareney Brown, a 20-year-old Richmond resident, was arrested without incident about 7 p.m. Monday at a relative's house in Oakland, Addington said.
The first suspect, 20-year-old Pittsburg resident Kiarra Price, was arrested Friday after investigators saw her leave her house in the 200 block of Kingsberry Place, Addington said.
The victim, Benjamin Merrill, 22, was found shot to death about 3 a.m. in Marina Walk Park. He had no identification and no criminal record and remained a "John Doe" for two days.
Shortly after the shooting, police issued a flyer to law enforcement agencies with a photograph of the victim. Coincidentally, Merrill's cousin, who was watching a trial in San Mateo County Superior Court, happened to look over and see a police officer holding a copy of the flyer, Addington said.
When Merrill's family contacted Pittsburg police and gave them Merrill's name, police were able to look up his fingerprints in the Department of Motor Vehicles database and confirm his identity, Addington said.
He said police are not releasing information about who they believe actually shot Merrill and are still investigating how he got to Pittsburg and what he was doing there.
The person who reported the shooting allegedly saw a car speeding away from the park just after hearing a shot fired, and investigators believe they have recovered the car. They have also recovered Merrill's iPhone, Addington said.
Both women have been booked into county jail on suspicion of murder and robbery. Price is also being held on an outstanding drug warrant and Brown is being held on a no-bail warrant out of Alameda County for vehicle theft and failure to obey an officer, a county jail official said.
Police expect to present the case to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office on Wednesday for filing of formal charges against both women, Addington said.
