Oakland Cops Shoot Gun-Wielding Youth
OAKLAND (BCN) ―
Oakland police shot and killed a young man they say was threatening them with a rifle in an East Oakland neighborhood, a spokesman said Wednesday.
According to Officer Roland Holmgren, the shooting took placeĀ about noon near the intersection of 79th Avenue and Rudsdale Street, a few blocks south of International Boulevard.
Holmgren said the victim had not yet been identified, but is an Oakland resident and "may be 16 years old."
Officers assigned to the department's gang unit were patrolling the 7900 block of Rudsdale Street, an area known for gang activity, according to Holmgren.
The officers saw the young man walking on the side of the street, apparently attempting to conceal something in his pants leg and waistband area, Holmgren said.
When the officers came closer, they saw it was a gun and stepped from their vehicle, according to Holmgren.
At that point, Holmgren said, the suspect pointed the gun, a sawed-off rifle, at the officers.
"The officers feared for their life" and shot him, Holmgren said. A total of three officers fired at the suspect, he said.
The young man was then taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Holmgren.
Holmgren said there have been "recent spikes in violence" in the area and didn't know if the boy was a known gang member, "but there's a definite possibility," he added.
All three officers have been placed on standard administrative leave while the shooting is being investigated.
