An Oakland police cruiser.
The city council pulled a vote on its "consent to search" program in order to address what supporters say are serious misconceptions about how police would contact home owners to search for weapons.
City Councilwoman Desley Brooks said police would only search a residence if asked to do so by a parent concerned their child was hiding a weapon inside the home.
"It was never my intent to violate anybody's constitutional rights or to have the police coming and knocking on somebody's door," she said.
Many Oakland residents agreed getting guns off the street should be a high priority, but feared police would pressure them to submit to an unlawful search.
Brooks said the program has great potential, but needs to be better to residents before it could be implemented.
"When this program was done in St. Louis the first year, they took 500 guns off the streets, and so that's significant," Brooks said.
