The Guardian Angels hit the streets of Oakland Friday night, patrolling the commercial districts in the wake of recent takeover restaurant robberies.
About 20 members of the volunteer safety patrol hoofed it up and down the Grand Lake, Lakeshore and East Lake neighborhoods at the request of Mayor Ron Dellums and Oakland police.
Residents and merchants of the crime-ridden neighborhoods were hoping the appearance of the anti-crime volunteers would help slow the recent spike in crime, as well as ease fears in the community.
While many in Oakland welcomed the help of the red berets, not everyone did. Some had their doubts about whether the Guardian Angels' presence would make any difference.
The addition of the Angels came after armed robbers hit eight businesses, holding up employees and diners, in the last month.
The head of the Oakland chapter of the Guardian Angels said this marked the first time a city government had come to the group asking for help.
