NorCal Mom Murder Suspects Left SF Suicide Note

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

PLACERVILLE, El Dorado County (CBS 5 / AP) ― New court documents show that drugs, poison and a suicide note were found in the San Francisco hotel room where two teens stayed after the girl's mother was found stabbed to death in her El Dorado Hills home, according to authorities.

The room at the Holiday Inn where 14-year-old Tylar Witt and 19-year-old Steven Colver stayed last week contained marijuana, drug paraphernalia, two bowls filled with cereal and rat poison. and a note that suggested the pair were planning to kill themselves on a beach, according to the search warrant.

Detectives also found condoms and a DVD of the 2001 film "Donnie Darko" in the hotel room.

The couple was captured in San Bruno and returned to El Dorado County last week.

Witt and Colver are accused of killing Witt's mother, 47-year-old Joanne Witt, earlier this month.

Authorities said Joanne suffered stab wounds in her neck, and was found covered in blood with a blanket draped over her.

Sources told CBS that Steven Colver had been renting a room at Joanne Witt's house in the time prior to the murder. The mother had allowed it because Tylar told her Steven was a good friend and was gay, according to sources.

A friend of Tylar's said her mother eventually found out that Tylar and Steven were a couple and Joanne Witt was not happy about it. He said Tylar and her mother fought about it.

"They got into arguments about that. I know about the statutory rape charges she was trying to file," said Tylar's friend Jordan Ubry. "Her mom told her she could never see him again. The mom was definitely not happy about the relationship. I know that."

Jordan described both Tylar and Steven as "nice people".

El Dorado County prosecutors have yet to decide whether to charge a 14-year-old girl as an adult in the slaying of her mother.

Deputy District Attorney Lisette Suder said the life sentence could be imposed if Witt is eventually tried and convicted as an adult. Witt's attorney, Mark Ralphs, declined comment.
