Charges Weighed For NorCal Teen In Mom Murder

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

PLACERVILLE, El Dorado County (CBS 5 / AP) ― El Dorado County prosecutors have yet to decide whether to charge a 14-year-old girl as an adult in the slaying of her mother.

During a hearing Monday, Superior Court Judge James Wagoner told the girl, Tylar Witt, that she could face 25 years to life.

The specific charges against Witt were not publicly disclosed because she has been charged as a juvenile and the court has sealed her records.

Deputy District Attorney Lisette Suder says the life sentence could be imposed if Witt is eventually tried and convicted as an adult. Witt's attorney, Mark Ralphs, declined comment.

The teen's boyfriend, 19-year-old Steven Colver, is charged with murder in the stabbing death of 47-year-old Joanne Witt. Her body was found last Monday inside her home in El Dorado Hills, an upscale community east of Sacramento.

Witt and Colver were arrested 2 days later at Tanforan Mall in San Bruno.
