Police Search Milpitas Landfill For Missing Woman

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

MILPITAS (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ―

The personal trainer of a missing San Jose woman appeared briefly in court Friday charged with her murder while police searched a Milpitas landfill for the woman's body.

A judge ordered Anthony Davis Evans, 45, held without bail in the Santa Clara County Jail pending arraignment next week.

Meantime, San Jose police and dogs combed through debris at the Newby Island Landfill in Milpitas in connection with the disappearance of 35-year old Ann Lisa Nguyen.

Nguyen, who worked at a market research firm in Palo Alto, has been missing for a week.

Police spokesman Enrique Garcia said the landfill search was one of several locations being searched based on information police had received. He declined to name the other search sites.

Police told CBS 5 that investigators found blood in both Evans' car and his apartment.  Investigators theorize Evans killed Nguyen and dumped her body in a dumpster, which led to Friday's search at the landfill.

Investigators said they believe Nguyen was killed at the apartment complex where Evans lives.

Nguyen's family said they last saw her Friday evening before she left to go to dinner and a movie. They reported her missing after she did not return home the next day.

Evans was arrested after Nguyen's brothers checked her cell phone records and mail and found her car parked at Evans' apartment.

Deputy District Attorney James Gibbons-Shapiro said Evans is charged as a three strikes offender and faces a maximum possible sentence of 81 years to life in prison if convicted.

"We've alleged five strike priors," Gibbons-Shapiro said.

The prior felony convictions, which include arson and kidnapping, stem from 1992. Gibbons-Shapiro would not provide any further details about them.

Evans is scheduled to return to court on Dec. 21.
