An electronic crimes task force of the U.S. Secret Service has taken on the investigation into a tampered ATM machine that bilked customers at a Lunardi's grocery store in Los Gatos out of more than $250,000.
More than 200 shoppers were victimized by the ATM machine that allowed identity thieves to access customers' account information.
Two men arrested earlier this month in Orange County for allegedly carrying out the scam have since posted bail.
A spokesman for the Secret Service would not comment specifically on the investigation, but said the agency's electronic crimes task forces worked by bringing together local police and industry.
The spokesman said in some cases scholars from major universities were also called in to share expertise on how particular crimes might have been carried out.
