Undersecretary Kernan To Plead Guilty To DUI

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

SACRAMENTO (CBS 5 / AP) ― The undersecretary who oversees California parolees and adult and juvenile prisons says he will plead guilty to driving under the influence.

In a statement released by the state corrections department Friday, 47-year-old Scott Kernan expressed regret for his actions and said he would enter the plea at a hearing in July.

The California Highway Patrol stopped Kernan, who was in a state vehicle, for speeding June 7 near his home in Rancho Murieta. Although authorities would not reveal his exact blood alcohol level, they said it exceeded the legal limit of 0.08.

In the statement, Kernan said he had been suspended for six weeks without pay after his arrest.

Kernan was appointed as one of three undersecretaries in the department in November 2008.
