A 4-month-old boy found unresponsive inside his father's car Monday evening at the El Cerrito Plaza Bay Area Rapid Transit station has died, according to authorities.
BART spokesman Linton Johnson said the baby was pronounced dead around 6 p.m. after being rushed to Doctor's Hospital in San Pablo.
The baby's distraught mother called police around 5:30 p.m. after discovering her son unresponsive in the silver Chrysler, Johnson said.
It appeared as though the child had been in the car most of the day, he added.
Investigators indicated that the boy's father, who normally leaves him with a babysitter before parking at the BART station, had brought him to the station earlier in the day.
When the infant's mother discovered her child wasn't where he was supposed to be, she went to the station and found the boy, Johnson said.
He noted there was a car seat in the Chrysler but it wasn't clear whether the baby boy was found in it or whether the windows were rolled up.
The boy was taken to the hospital, where he later died, by the El Cerrito Fire Department and the parents followed in a separate ambulance.
Authorities were not releasing the parents' or baby's names.
"Clearly what happened today ended up being a tragedy for everyone
involved," Johnson said.
The parents were being questioned Monday night by BART police.
