Suspects Released In Hayward Kids Shooting

Hayward police released two alleged gang members who were arrested last week in connection with a 2007 drive-by shooting that killed a 4-year-old girl and seriously wounded two other young children, a police sergeant said Tuesday.
The suspects were released Monday afternoon after being arrested for their alleged connection to the March 2007 drive-by shooting that killed 4-year-old Datasha Williams and wounded her cousins, 4-year-old Tatiana Coria and her 3-year-old brother, Hayward police Sgt. Steve Brown said.
Brown said investigators "are still trying to still solidify a good case before we present it to the district attorney."
On Thursday, the homicide suspects were two of five alleged members of the street gang DGF who were arrested. The gang is believed to be responsible for committing violent crimes in Hayward and elsewhere in southern Alameda County, according to police.
The five suspects included one woman, three men and a juvenile male, according to police. The other three suspects had been arrested on unrelated charges and were also released Monday, Brown said.
According to investigators, Datasha was playing outside with her two cousins in the front yard of a Hayward home when they were hit by a spray of bullets fired from a vehicle.
Datasha died at a hospital from a bullet wound to the head and the two other children were hospitalized. Tatiana, also shot in the head, was on life support and will face a lifetime of rehabilitation, according to police. The boy was grazed by a bullet and survived the attack.
Brown said that although the suspects in the shooting were released, they "can certainly be charged and rearrested again."
He said based on what investigators learned over the weekend, "we still believe we have a good enough case to go forward, just with some more work that it's been determined that we have to go through. It's not a done deal by any stretch of the imagination."
