Campbell Man Accused Of Targeting Cops With Laser

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

CAMPBELL (CBS 5) ― South Bay officers said Friday that they have finally caught up with a suspect who has been shining a laser at police helicopters for years.

Michael Weeker of Campbell was picked up on Monday by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's office on ten counts of shining a green laser at an aircraft.

The investigation began after members of the Sheriff's Office and San Jose Police helicopter flight crews reported being struck in the eyes with a green laser. Police said the 39-year-old is responsible for several separate incidents over the past three years.

Officers said exposure to green laser can cause permanent damage to the eye which may include blindness.

Weeker's arrest was the result of a joint effort between the Sheriff's Office, the San Jose Police Department and the F.B.I., according to the Sheriff's Office.

Prior to Monday's arrest, officers had narrowed down the suspect's location to a single block in Campbell. He was finally tracked down after a shining the laser at a Sheriff's helicopter on Monday night.

If convicted, Weeker could face up to eight years in prison.
