Bay Area authorities are trying to track down a group of scammers responsible for one of the most elaborate ATM theft operations ever seen. Thieves are stealing credit card and PIN numbers, along with thousands of dollars from people using gas station ATM's.
According to police, 2-4 thieves have glued on data-stealing devices on ATM's at over 30 gas stations throughout the Bay Area, from San Jose, to San Francisco and Pittsburg. Over 80 people were ripped off by a compromised machine at an ARCO station in Los Altos.
The sophisticated scheme might also be linked to a similar scam involving gas stations in Southern California, police say.
