FREMONT (CBS 5 / BCN) ― Fremont police shot and wounded a man who allegedly shot at police officers before leading them on a vehicle chase early Thursday.

Officers pulled over 23-year-old Jorge Cazarez near the intersection of Fremont Boulevard and Tamayo Street on suspicion of operating a stolen vehicle at about 2 a.m., police said.

With guns drawn, officers approached Cazarez and ordered him out of the car.

Cazarez allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired at the officers, prompting police to return fire, officials said.

A short vehicle pursuit ensued, ending at Fremont Boulevard and Thornton Avenue when Cazarez jumped from his vehicle and fled on foot, according to officials.

Cazarez ran toward a gas station and fired at officers again, which officers responded to by firing back, police said.

A police canine located Cazarez in some bushes and found his gun nearby, according to police. Cazarez sustained two gunshot wounds and was taken to a local hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, police added.

No one other than the suspect was injured during the episode, police said.

The four officers involved will be placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the preliminary investigation by the Fremont Police Department and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

Cazarez was transported to Santa Rita Jail upon his release from a hospital Thursday morning. He was booked on four counts of attempted homicide, police said.
