More than 40 people have reported their vehicles were shot with a BB gun within the past month on Interstate Highway 680 in the Fremont area, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Trent Cross said Wednesday.
Since word got out about the sniper Tuesday, victims with shattered windows or damage to the body of their vehicles have called from as far as Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, Cross said.
The shooter or shooters have been using BB or pellet guns, Cross said.
Most of the shootings have occurred late at night on the weekend between the Mission Boulevard and Washington Boulevard exits, he said.
The CHP has increased patrols in the area and has both uniformed and undercover officers working around the clock to locate the suspect or suspects.
No one has been seriously injured in the shootings, but as it stands now, the suspect would face felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon if apprehended.
On Saturday, at least five vehicles were shot on the highway between 11:40 p.m. and 11:45 p.m., CHP Sgt. Rick Luciano said.
One couple was traveling north when the passenger window shattered and glass struck the woman's the face and neck, Luciano said. She was not hospitalized.
The CHP also found several dead pigeons in the area, Luciano said.
Cross said the CHP is not specifying where the shots are coming from because it could compromise the investigation.
If a person does get hit, he or she should pull over to a safe area and call 911.
The CHP is asking anyone whose vehicle has been hit or who suspects their vehicle may have been hit to call them at (925) 828-0466 or (800) TELL-CHP.
