Fatal Stabbing Along 680 Fremont; Suspect Arrested

 CBS 5 CrimeWatch

FREMONT (CBS 5 / BCN) ― One man fatally stabbed another man on the side of northbound Interstate Highway 680 Friday morning and then left the body near the Vargas Road exit in Fremont, police said.

The pair were fighting prior to the stabbing around 9:15 a.m. and their minivan had hit a travel trailer on a pickup truck. They pulled the van over and started a knife fight, said Fremont Police Sgt. Jeff Swadener.

After the suspect allegedly stabbed the victim, he got back into the minivan and tried to flee to a nearby nursery near the Sunol exit but a California Highway Patrol officer responding to a report of his erratic driving detained him, Swadener said.

The identities of the two men were not immediate released. Police said the suspect was a man in his 30s, while the victim was a man in his 20s.

The right lane of northbound 680 near the crime scene and the Vargas Road offramp were closed until Friday night because of the investigation.
