Cyclist Killed In Hit-&-Run Near Martinez
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (BCN) ―
A hit-and-run collision in unincorporated Contra Costa County Monday evening left a 49-year-old bicyclist dead and the California Highway Patrol is looking for clues about the driver.
Mark Alan Pendleton of Martinez was riding a Shimano road bike south on McEwan Road near state Highway 4 between 5 and 6 p.m. when he was fatally struck by a vehicle, the CHP said.
Pendleton was wearing a red and black jersey and shorts when he was hit by the vehicle believed to be traveling north, but the CHP doesn't know what the vehicle looks like. It is thought the vehicle crossed over into the southbound lane and hit Pendleton, who was riding close to the west shoulder, the CHP said.
The vehicle did not stop but may have sustained front-end damage, including a broken headlamp or turn signal.
An off-duty fire captain from Crockett spotted Pendleton just after 6 p.m. and called for medical assistance but Pendleton died at the scene.
Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect vehicle with the damage described by the CHP should call (925) 646-4980 or (800) TELL-CHP.
